Just curious how the CD you were working on with the old Cat promo films is coming? I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing those! You don't know how many times I've wished I still had that goofy little projector thing and tapes my dad had to watch those old films on. I must have watched "The Race" at least 1000 times. I remember one that showed a cross country race, too. Have you got that one? Anyway, no matter what you've got, I can't wait to see them!

Hi, Well, it's been a long, on again-off again, frustrating journey to try and get some old films transferred to VHS or DVD... But, I think I'm real close to getting it done. When I first started my search for a lab that would do it, I found a place out in CA that does film restoration/repair/editing/transfer at the professional level and they said they would do it... for $3,200.00 Ouch!!!! I said "thanks", but I couldn't justify spending that much. So I started searching around the 'net for one of those transfer mills. The first place I tried made the transfer too red and said that was the best they could do. The second place transferred at the wrong speed (too slow), and the color was too green, and said that was the best they could do. The third place zoomed in too close and cut out too much of the film, and when I asked them to try again they did a little better but the color was all washed out on the second try... and they said it was the best they could do. About $300.00 gone and no decent transfers....... So, I put that project on the back burner for awhile and just enjoyed watching them on the Fairchild projector that I have. It's an original from an old Arctic dealer, complete with the stand and some movies. I also have been collecting the old films and have 16 of them (plus 3 Scorpion ones). And they are so cool to watch. And you're right, "The Race" is one of the best! It's probably my favorite although "What'll They Think Of Next", "Sno Pro '74" and "Eagle River (1979)" are pretty good, too! But, the warm weather has got me back to wanting these things transferred before the snow flies. So, I've found another place that was rated high (in PC magazine), and I've seen some samples of their work and it looks real good. I'm sending them one of the films to transfer as a test, and if it turns out okay, I'll let them do the whole job. They are not cheap, but they aren't as much as that "pro" place! I've been saving my pennies, so keep your fingers crossed... It looks like, when all is said and done, there will be 4 DVD's (or VHS's) with about 60 minutes on each. I'm not sure what each will sell for, as I'll have to wait and see what the final bill is and then "do the math". STAY TUNED ! ....... Later ....... Paul W.
