Hello, I am considering fixing up a old cat for the heck of it. Many years ago I had a old panther with a 399 Kohler that I had twin carbs on and a little porting and a hooker pipe. I really liked the smoothness of that old motor and it went pretty good to, it would hang with a 440 Sachs puma till I was topped out then the 440 would pull away. Paul W might remember my old panther, he is my younger brother, but he was pretty young at the time.
I was thinking of doing a 70 or 71 puma, I am not looking for a perfect restoration, but I was wondering if the 399 Kohler came stock in the early pumas? I would also consider a early lynx if I can find one. If they didn't come with the Kohler I would put one in anyway but if they did come with one I would try to make it look like it is supposed to, but on the other hand I always liked the big mouth hoods so maybe originality would go out the window lol.
I hope I didn't sound to mixed up about what I want to do. Tom

they made approx 3584 puma's in 1971 with the 399 Kohler. They only made a handful of 1970 puma exts with the 399 kohler. This info is listed on the 3rd page of the member side of this site under production numbers

Hello After talking with Paul and my other brother it looks like I will be doing a 71 puma with a big mouth hood and a K399 Kohler motor.
Paul says he some kind of"kit" exhaust that would be cool to run on it. He also has a matching set of old tilitson carbs for my dual carb setup. I ran 2 Walburo [sp?] carbs way back when on my old panther, Not sure but they might have been 72 EXT carbs.
My old panther was a complete dog with the stock muffler, But after I put on the Hooker pipe it really ran good, I also had a 73 El Tigre clutch on it, like I said it was pretty fast for a 399 Kohler but the old belts back then didn't last very long on it and I had to by plugs by the pound for it but I guess that was true for most of the old sleds back then. I wonder if its possible to put a CDI from a newer Kohler engine into the K399? That would help the plug problem alot I am sure.
I worked in the shop of a cat dealership back then so I could get stuff cheap and sometimes free, like when cat updated the 73 clutches we had tons of the 73 "round" style clutches laying around so I scarfed up a few of the El Tigre ones. I still like the old 73 style better than the 74 hex type.
Talking about this stuff makes me realize how long ago that was, darn I am getting old lol. Tom W

Tom,
Your plug fouling should be a lot better with today's oil at leaner mixes. I run 40:1 to 80:1 depending on the oil and can usually run one set of plugs all season.

I believe the Kohler motors had their own special hood in 71. The only year they were used.

Arctic Cat used the 399 Kohler in 1969, 1970, and 1971. The 1969 and 1970, used the regular Panther hood, but in 1971, the hood of the 399 Kohler, and the 303 Wankel Panthers were basically the same, except the wankel ones had small vents on the lower side of the hood!
